Dear Readers;

We would like to welcome you to the start of another academic year at BIBS Shunyi’s Elementary School (ES). Over the summer our students have matured a little and have had numerous experiences, which we hope they will share with their friends and other classmates. Our campus has also evolved as well, there is a new canteen, new buses, brightly painted classrooms, new lights, a new security and property management company, to name but a few.

Additionally our numbers have swelled by 40% over the summer vacation break, which will allow our students to make new friends from home and abroad and hopefully make lasting friendships.

It is official, BIBS Shunyi’s ES is now an authorized IBPYP World School. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of our dedicated ES team last year and the support of the whole school community we achieved this huge milestone in our journey with the IB.

This week in KA our students have made lots of new friends and spent time getting to know their teachers. We’ve learned some new songs and sung some old favorites. Students have had lots of opportunities to explore the classroom and school. We’ve spent time getting to know new rules and routines. Students also met their specialist teachers and had fun making music, painting and moving in different ways.

This week the KB class students have been learning about the rules and routines of their new class and school. Meeting all the new teachers that will become part of their Kindergarten year was exiting! They also have been having lots of fun making new friends and playing outside. Who knew playing could be so exhausting?

This week Grade 1 had a great start to the school year. Students had the time to get to know each other and begin lessons in all subject areas. Students, teachers and parents are adjusting to being back in school. We are grateful for your support as the year begins. We are looking forward to the year ahead!

This week, Grade 2 has been settling in, getting to know the class and school routines. In our classes, we went over the Essential Agreements for our class and the playground. We also used our knowledge of Kelso’s Choices to solve small problems.

This week in Grade 3 we have been introducing ourselves to each other. The students have introduced themselves to the teacher and he has been introducing himself to them. They are learning the rules and expectations inside of the classroom. We have begun a brief overview of the PYP topic to be discussed in this unit, safety. Many of the students are becoming used to their new schedule and have been encouraged to give a book review in the English classes next week. In Maths we have began looking at numbers and times, and the students have been split into small groups to enable them to interact with their teachers more.

We are all excited about the new school year! The first week in school with G4A we focused on getting to know each other. We want to build a safe and caring environment in the classroom. We also introduced the new students to important parts of the IB PYP and reintroduced students who are returning for another year. We will review the learner profiles, key concepts, UOI and inquiry cycle. Next week we will begin to assess students on core subject areas such as reading, writing, math and Chinese.

Grade 4B have settled into the week well. They have been focusing on setting up classroom essential agreements, making new friends and practicing class routines. We are excited to have many new students in our class. We are looking forward to a great year of learning in an exciting and secure environment.

This week Grade 5 students have had a wonderful time getting to know each other this week. They have begun to understand the expectations of being a grade five student – the head of the elementary school. They have had a fun time exploring their personality, sharing their feelings about the New Year and creating essential agreements to operate effectively in the classroom. We are looking forward to an exciting and passion-filled year.

It was so great to see students, returning and new, using the library this week. The library has grown so much over the last year, soon we will have even more shelves to hold all the books. Parents, please remember you are welcome to use the library, too. Parents can borrow up to 10 books for 2 weeks.

Heather School Librarian.

I enjoyed meeting my new students and I look forward to getting to know them better over the course of the academic year. The art room notice board will display the artworks that the students had fun making this week you can drop by and see them anytime.

Alicia ES Art Teacher.

It has been really great getting to know all the new students and reconnecting with the returning students in Music classes this week. There are lots more musically talented students this year and I am looking forward to some wonderful performances throughout the year from them. This week we have been looking at how we count out a jamming rhythm and creating some wonderful sounds.

Louis ES Music Tecaher.

During the first week of Physical Education classes we identified and discussed the essential agreements and how we can apply it to our daily routine at school and at home. We discussed the importance of physical activity and the application thereof in our daily lives. We started off this week with basic movements and how to move effectively in your own space. The swimming lessons will continue as normal. We are looking forward to build up our Swimming Team to compete in all yearly competitions.

Wicus ES PE Teacher.

WELCOME BACK

On behalf of all staff, we would like to offer a very warm welcome to all students and families. A very special welcome to all new families as well! We hope that your year is not only a very positive experience but most importantly filled with much educational progress and success.

We have had a great couple of days and it has been wonderful to see all of the happy students who are settling in very well and engaged in productive learning activities already. Our staff have been impressed with all students (even our Kindergarten students) regarding how quickly they have settled into routines and have been so well behaved.

STAFF PLANNING WEEK

Last week the staff were engaged in a very positive and productive planning week with a focus on class preparation, curriculum planning and school organisation. With many new teachers joining our team, an extensive orientation and introduction to our campus was provided. COMMUNICATION MATTERS

All parents are invited to our “Welcome back to School” event next Thursday night from 6:00-7:30pm here at the school. The purpose of the night will be to meet the teachers and learn more about the school and class routines for the school year.

All families should have received a welcome back to school letter from our Principal today, with information about the 2018/19 academic year and some of the changes and improvements to our school that have been made this year.

Once again this year, all regular school and class information and announcements will be processed through the class wechat groups. Parents are encouraged to contact the class homeroom teachers via the class wechat group as your first point of contact with the school for any needs related to your child. Parents and teachers are requested not to use the wechat group after 7:00pm each night and not on the weekend in order to maintain boundaries, balance and mutual respect.
