  Whole School:

We congratulate our students, teachers and parents for another energetic and fruitful week of study and work at Beanstalk.  Please find the following school updates for your information.  We wish you all a very happy and relaxing weekend!

Upper East Side Campus

  1. Admissions of SiblingsPlease be informed that application forms need to be completed now for any siblings of current students that are applying for BIBS UES for next school year ( Start Aug. 2018).  The forms are available from the reception or online on our BIBS website. Completed forms should be handed in to the reception or admissions staff.

  1. International Dress Up Day–Tuesday October 24 is United Nations (UN) day. To coincide with this, UES campus will recognise the diverse cultures of the world by having a dress up day. Classes have combined with their buddy class and identified a country they have been exploring over two Friday buddy class times. Home room teachers will communicate directly with parents regarding any details specific with their room. On Tuesday class activities run from 9 – 9:45am. Parents are more than welcome to come and join in. Please note there is no parade in the morning; we will look forward to a parade during our Literacy week in November.

  1. Flu, cough and colds This is the season when we see a lot of children and teachers with coughs, colds and the flu. Please remind your child of good hygiene practices, ‘cover a cough’-coughing into their arm-not their hand, and frequently washing hands with soap and water and always drying them well in this colder weather, wearing a mask and staying at home of having a fever or at risk of infecting others.

  1. Library events Lots of exciting events during this International School Library month offered by our dynamic library team! Don’t forget the culminating event DOT DAY on Tuesday 31st October.  We are pleased to host a visiting author and illustrator Curtis Jobling on 2nd November….

  1. School Photographs– the deadline was Friday to send in the order and payment for your child’s photographs. We will accept additional orders until Monday but no later than this.

Middle/High School Trips

We have decided to postpone the trips till spring. We were having difficulty booking all the students to the same venue and on the same flights. As head of school I also felt that in the end it would be better for the different grades to go to different venues. In this way each year students could look forward to going to a new venue; one which would be connected to their studies in school. Thank you for your patience in this matter, but I am sure with more time to plan we can guarantee a successful “School Without Walls” experience. We are already planning for this new way of organizing our trips.

Middle/High School Play

Originally the MS/HS had planned to do the play Moulin, but upon further consideration we decided that it would be better to choose a play with more good parts for many students. We will instead do Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In the Chinese classroom.

This week, Chinese teachers continued their “five-minute classroom, 5,000 years of China” campaign at the BIBS Shunyi Campus. In the first five minutes, Chinese teachers completed an expansion of tang poems, song lyrics, and the evolution of Chinese characters according to different grades. Next week, Chinese department of elementary school will begin a “happy reading” campaign. Besides teachers and children reading, parents are invited to attend. They will receive an invitation letter. You can tell stories to children, or recommend a good book to children, or you’ll get an interview invitation…This is an interesting reading club. We hope the children will enjoy reading more. We look forward to your participation.

Follow up to the math Mapping sharing session.

During our Monday afternoon staff meeting, all of the Elementary staff joined together to share ideas about our Bilingual Mathematics Program. We focused on the different ways that we can create meaningful links between our Units of Inquiry and Math lessons. It was great to see all of the staff collaborating and sharing ideas. We made some wonderful progress and are looking forward to continuing to develop more inquiry based math activities.

Open-mindedness within the ES Shunyi Campus community.

The students and staff were posed the question ‘Are you being open-minded during your daily life and learning as a member of the school community?’ Having attained the resposnes they were then asked to provide evidence of this in the form of a written text, presentation of artwork. Once they had been completed they were taken to the ES Canteen to be put on display as a reminder and for others to see on a daily basis.

Keeping ourselves up with the latest in IT.

Digital Support: Over the last few weeks teachers have been exposed to a variety of internet resources and websites they are able to implement in their PYP classroom. We are also in the foundation stages of starting an online collaboration tool for staff to use – this will facilitate more integration between staff planning and document storage.

Halloween in the Library.

For Halloween, I will be asking students if they want to decorate a storybook character pumpkin/squash at home to bring to the library, where we can then have a storybook pumpkin patch. These will be displayed in the library the week of Halloween. Students can use a real pumpkin or squash or they can decorate a paper pumpkin I will provide. I will put this in a library newsletter this week with examples to send to parents and discuss with the students in their library lessons.

There will be Halloween/Fall decoration and a book display in the library and we will have a “selfie” station with props for students to take photos, with our library ipad.

Important Dates.

We have been given a wonderful opportunity of introducing Dr. Dorothy Dexter from United Family Health of Beijing, to present a “Health Talk” on Optimal Nutrition for students with an emphasis on how healthy eating and the right nutrients can optimize performance. Come and join us in the Gym on Monday, 23rdOctober at 4pm.

There will be an Elementary School Parent Coffee/Tea morning on Tuesday 24th October in the main canteen. We will report back on the latest developments within the school, as well as the assessment and reporting strategies used in the Elementary School.

The Elementary school will be having a Halloween celebration on Tuesday October 31st. The staff, student council and PTA are working together to arrange for judging of costumes, trick or treating and a parade.

Report Cards will be emailed out on November 10th 2017. All parents have been requested to confirm their email addresses with their homeroom teachers. There will be follow up Three Way conferences with the parents and students on November 17th 2017.
